Can your Pharmacist help?

Pharmacists are experts in the use of medicines and are able to diagnose and offer treatment for a range of illnesses and ailments immediately, without the need to make a doctor’s appointment. Pharmacists can also advise you when you should seek further medical assistance. Pharmacists can suggest over-the-counter (OTC) treatments that do not need a prescription for a range of minor illnesses.

Most pharmacies can also offer prescription medicine for seven common conditions, without you needing to see a GP. Each condition is subject to age eligibility when providing prescription medicine. If you are not within these age ranges, a pharmacist can still offer advice and guidance about self care treatment with over-the-counter medicines, but you may still need to see a GP.

If you have any questions about any medication, they would be happy to talk to you. In particular, to avoid dangerous drug-drug interactions, you should consult a pharmacist before you take prescription medicines and over-the-counter preparations at the same time.

Most pharmacies have private consultation rooms that can be used for consultations with patients. After a consultation, the pharmacy will send a notification to the patient’s GP.
