LGBTQ+

What Does LGBTQ+ Mean?

LGBTQ+ is a term that describes people who may have different sexual orientations or gender identities.

This includes people who are:

  • Lesbian
  • Gay
  • Bisexual
  • Transgender
  • Queer or questioning
  • Other identities (shown by the + sign)

Everyone is different, and everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.

How We Can Help

At Sett Valley Medical Centre, we want everyone to feel safe, welcome, and supported.

We will:

  • Treat you with dignity and respect
  • Use your chosen name and pronouns
  • Keep your information private
  • Listen to your needs and concerns
  • Help you access the right services and support

Tell Us What Matters to You

If you would like us to use a different name, title, or pronouns, please let us know. We will do our best to record this on your medical record.

Our Promise

We believe everyone has the right to good healthcare. We are committed to providing a friendly, welcoming service where all patients feel respected, valued, and included.

Changing Your Gender

If you would like to change the gender on your NHS record, please contact the practice. We will explain what happens and help you through the process.

You do not need surgery, hormone treatment, or a Gender Recognition Certificate to ask for this change.

What Happens When My Gender Is Changed?

Your NHS record may be given a new NHS number. Your health information will be moved to the new record.

This can sometimes affect:

  • Screening invitations
  • Online services
  • Some hospital records

Screening for Trans and Non-Binary People

It is important to go for the screening tests that are right for your body.

Sometimes, screening invitations are sent based on the gender shown on your NHS record. This means some trans and non-binary people may not be invited for all the tests they need. More details can be found at NHS Screening Programmes for Trans People

You may still need:

  • Cervical screening if you have a cervix
  • Breast screening if you have breast tissue
  • Prostate checks if you have a prostate and develop symptoms

For example:

  • A trans man who still has a cervix may need cervical screening.
  • A trans woman may be invited for breast screening if eligible.

We’re Here to Help

If you are not sure which screening tests you need, please contact the practice. We can give advice in a private, friendly, and respectful way and help make sure you get the right screening and support.
